With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, these chocolate covered strawberry rolls are the perfect way to show love to those special people in your life. Chocolate covered strawberries are one of my favorite Valentine’s Day sweets. However, making them into a gooey, carb filled treat makes them that much better.

These rolls are filled with a chocolate and cinnamon filling and topped with the most delicious strawberry buttercream frosting. They are sure to be a hit and not just for Valentine’s Day.

Recipe: Chocolate Covered Strawberry Rolls

To make chocolate covered strawberry rolls, in a large bowl attached to a stand mixer, or a large mixing bowl if making by hand, mix together the warm milk, yeast and sugar. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes to proof, or bubble.

After proofing, add the melted butter, salt and eggs to the yeast mixture and mix until combined. Add the flour, one cup at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl while kneading. Continue kneading for about 5-8 minutes. After kneading, the dough should be slightly sticky to the touch. Cover the dough with a clean dish towel or plastic and let it sit for 1 1/2 hours to rise.

Once the dough has risen, remove the dough from the bowl onto a clean surface. Roll the dough into a large rectangular shape, about 20 inches long. Spread the softened butter over the entire surface of the dough, leaving about 1/2 inch around the edges. In a small bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle the cocoa mixture evenly over the spread butter. Or a delicious alternative is to use Nutella as the filling.

Roll the dough lengthwise, cinnamon roll style. Using a serrated knife, cut the roll every 1 1/2 inches. Place each roll onto a greased baking sheet, about 1 inch apart.

Cover the rolls and let them rise again for 45 minutes. After rising, bake at 350 degrees F for 15-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and the dough has an internal temperature of 190 degrees F.

Let the rolls cool on the pan for about 5-10 minutes. While they are cooling, make the frosting by beating together the butter, strawberries, milk and powdered sugar until smooth and fluffy. Evenly spread the frosting over the rolls and enjoy!

Can you use frozen strawberries in the buttercream? Couldn’t find fresh strawberries at my local grocery store.
